Foundation’s Random Acts of Culture, http://www.randomactsofculture.org
Why: In the past 2 years, communities in 8 cities around the country experienced Knight Foundation’s Random Acts of Culture as part of the Knight Foundation’s initiative to introduce new ways the arts are presented. The Foundation hired local artists and produced events that succeeded in bringing music and dance out of the symphony halls, into the streets and into everyday lives. Past performance venues include airports, lobbies, department stores, farmers’ markets and trains, surprising people as they go about everyday living.
Miami Beach and Philadelphia (on Sept. 15) are the last two Random Acts of Culture.
Who: Coordinated by the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, 200 singers, musicians, drummers and dancers from all over Miami-Dade County will gather together for a pop up performance of drumming and dance set to a new arrangement of "Ode to Joy" by Miami-based conductor and arranger Sam Hyken of the Miami Music Project. Integrating classical, vocal, jazz, gospel and Afro-Cuban rhythms, artists include musicians from the Miami Music Project and the Frost School of Music, singers from the Miami Mass Choir and Master Chorale, drummers and dancers from Ife-Ile Afro-Cuban dance company, and dance students from the 2012 Ailey Camp and the Edwin Holland Dance Ensemble.

The most exclusive invitation-only event during this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach turned in to an award-winning bombshell on Friday night, when one hundred of the music industry’s closest contemporaries were taken by complete surprise by one today’s leading music icons during a private dinner party at Vic & Angelo’s in South Beach.
Half way through devouring mammoth sized dishes of 11oz kobe meatballs, one hundred of the closest friends of acclaimed songwriter and music producer, Rico Love, stopped to listen while one of the co-hosts of the evening stood up on his chair to address the party as the music stopped.
With a large sized black leather bag on the table in front of him, and with a starry-eyed Rico Love sitting alongside, legendary pop icon, Usher, unzipped the bag and reached in. In front of an audience of dozens of astonished onlookers, the king of urban pop touchingly presented his last ever Grammy award for his song “There Goes My Baby,” written and co-produced by Love, to his good friend and mentor.
“This is one of many, but I just wanted to say how my successes are your successes. Without him, I wouldn’t have completed this journey, so I wanted to present this to you as a good friend.” The crowd cheered in delight.
“This category of Best R&B Male Vocal Performance no longer exists, so I wanted to give you something memorable from my personal Grammy collection.”
A whole host of well-known personalities came out in force to celebrate the 29th birthday of Rico Love at the newly opened Vic & Angelo’s Coal Oven Enoteca, co-hosted by restaurateur David Manero, and attended by a who’s who list from the sports and entertainment world. Lining up on the red carpet inside the patio of the restaurant were: co-host and R&B legend Mary J. Blige, actress Gabrielle Union, R&B singer-songwriter and actress Deborah Cox, Miami HEAT kingpin Chris Bosh, Miami HEAT NBA All-star Juwan Howard, emerging Hip Hop artist Yelawolf, E! News correspondent and DJ Clinton Sparks, R&B singer Melanie Fiona, BET presenter Rocsi Diaz, Adriana from Housewives of Miami, Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis, singer-songwriter Teairra Marí, record label executive Sylvia Rhone, local philanthropist Tracy Mourning and socilaites Roy and Lea Black. DJ Affect provided soulful beats for the night.
Four of the lead actors in the New World School of The Arts production of "Spring Awakening," Ryan Jacobs (Melchoir), Gerardo Pelati (Moritz), Elaine Flores (Wendla) and Jessica Sanford (Ilsa) discuss the play, their roles, the appeal of the musical and the challenges of playing teenagers coming of age in 1890's Germany.
NEW WORLD SCHOOL OF THE ARTS
LAUNCHES THEATER SEASON WITH A DARING RENDITION OF SPRING AWAKENING AT THE COLONY THEATER IN MIAMI BEACH OCTOBER 7 - OCTOBER 9
MIAMI- In celebration of its 25th year anniversary, New World School of the Arts will launch the college theater season in a grand and daring scale, as it presents the Tony-award winning musical Spring Awakening, based on the play by Frank Wedekind. Directed by NWSA theater faculty and renowned actor James Randolph, this musical highlights the artistic talent of the college sophomores, juniors and seniors. A controversial play due in part to its sexual connotations in the western culture, Randolph notes - "this play has had a life in Universities because it deals with those issues that directly impact the youth of this country. In fact it was produced at New World School of the Arts in 1994. Having been familiar with it in graduate school but seeing it performed, I was truly engaged and intrigued." "Spring Awakening is offering our students the opportunity to stretch their acting and vocal skills in a rock musical, which is a genre that we don't often explore at New World" explained Patrice Bailey, dean of theatre at New World School of the Arts. "The division feels that it is an essential part of our music theater training to allow students to be exposed to current trends and musical styles of the 21stcentury. Spring Awakening is a significant piece of theater that fits into this component. It is also exciting for the Theater Division to be the first college in the South Florida area to produce Spring Awakening during our25th Anniversary year!" "Frank Wedekind was a man born before his time" mentioned the NWSA Director. "The original play, Spring Awakening [also known as A Children's Tragedy], is in many ways indicative one of the most common conflicts in western culture and that is of generations. The play, which was banned for decades due to its controversial content, had a limited production in New York City in 1917 (only one performance). Although it criticizes the sexually-oppressive culture of late 19th century Germany, it is timeless because there is always controversy between parents and children, schools and students, religious institutions and their members on the value and function of sex and sexuality. The human animal certainly has always had all kinds of tendencies in regards to sex and the freedoms pursued by individuals and groups," concluded Randolph. Theater and music theater students at NWSA hone their craft through acting technique, movement and speech classes, focusing on fundamentals of physical and emotional preparation. With performance at its core, training is based on the classical texts and the principles of drama as well as practical incursions into the contemporary and experimental edges of theater. Consequently, alumni are found performing on stage nationally and internationally and their talent and vision are recognized and highly regarded in the industry. New World School of the Arts was created by the Florida Legislature as a center of excellence in the performing and visual arts, and is an educational partnership of Miami Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College and the University of Florida. Through its partnership with the University of Florida NWSA is able to grant Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees.
