Here is the trailer for my short film on the Friends of Jupiter Beach
The Garbage of Jupiter Beach
Cyndi Lenz
What weighs 20,000 pounds and takes nearly 4,000 people to move it? The Garbage on Jupiter Beach. 15 years ago a local resident Anita Lankler made a deal with the City of Jupiter. You let our dogs on the beach and we'll pick up the garbage. This little group grew into a membership of 4,000 plus and became the "Friends of Jupiter Beach." Once a month hundreds of people, 6 to 86, from fifteen zip codes surrounding Palm Beach County, converge onto Jupiter Beach... to pick up the garbage.
Over the past three years, since August of 2006, more than 4,000 Friends of Jupiter Beach volunteers have joined the monthly effort to remove trash, paper, plastics, cigarette butts, broken beach furniture, car parts, recyclables and garbage from the 2 1/2 mile stretch of dog-friendly beach. They estimate the weight each month, and the cumulative total surpassed the 20,000 pound mark at the Saturday, October 3 beach cleanup! An average of 150 volunteers permonth remove an average of 500 pounds of garbage and recyclables per month during the two-hour event. Volunteers come from all walks of life, all age groups, and 15 area zip codes.
On the first Saturday of every month (weather permitting) volunteers gather at Ocean Cay Park to scour the beach from the Juno Beach pier to the southern edge of Carlin Park, making good on a pledge made to the Town of Jupiter 15 years ago. In 1994, the threat of closing the beach to dogs rallied a small group of concerned citizens, who mobilized quickly and began organizing beach cleanups and providing dog waste bags at beach crossovers. Since then, the growth of the group has exploded, as individuals and businesses rally to join an effort which repeatedly demonstrates care for the marine environment and the privilege of taking our four-footed friends to one of the last dog beaches in the area. As a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit corporation, the group relies on donations and sponsorships from concerned citizens and a supportive business community to assume ALL COSTS for the operations, saving the taxpayers of Jupiter and Palm Beach County significantly.
The Beach Cleanup is the first Saterday of every month. Volunteers gather at 8am SHARP at the Anita Lankler Pavilion in Ocean Cay Park, off Marcinski Road and US Hwy 1. They divide into teams, clean the 2 1/2 mile stretch of dog-friendlly beach, and return by 9:20am for a complimentary continental breakfast. Beach cleanups are SHINE ONLY; if weather is iffy, volunteers should call the FJB message line at 561-748-8140 by 7:15am to listen for a possible cancellation message. School community service hours are awarded. There is no need for individuals to register in advance but organized groups are kindly requested to leave a message on the FJB phone line. Volunteers of all ages are welcome; the cleanup guidelines and code of safety are available on the website at

On May 6th, 2009, documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, along with Yosemite National Park Ranger, Shelton Johnson, visited students from James H. Bright Elementary School in Hialeah, Florida. Burns was in the South Florida area as part of a cross-country promotional tour for his latest project, The National Parks America's Best Idea. Students from Mrs. Ramirez and Mrs. Montiel's 5th grade class watched clips from the upcomimg documentary, asked questions, and posed for pictures with Burns and Johnson. Johnson, who is featured in Burns' film, spoke on the history and importance of America's National Parks.
Earlier in the year, students from this class participated in the Everglades Environmental Education Program at Royal Palm, which allows kids to discover first hand the different animals and habitats located in Everglades National Park. Produced by WPBT 2, the video, 'Untold Stories: Everglades National Park' captures their experiences into the 'River of Grass.'
