Here is the trailer for my short film on the Friends of Jupiter Beach
The Garbage of Jupiter Beach
Cyndi Lenz
What weighs 20,000 pounds and takes nearly 4,000 people to move it? The Garbage on Jupiter Beach. 15 years ago a local resident Anita Lankler made a deal with the City of Jupiter. You let our dogs on the beach and we'll pick up the garbage. This little group grew into a membership of 4,000 plus and became the "Friends of Jupiter Beach." Once a month hundreds of people, 6 to 86, from fifteen zip codes surrounding Palm Beach County, converge onto Jupiter Beach... to pick up the garbage.
Over the past three years, since August of 2006, more than 4,000 Friends of Jupiter Beach volunteers have joined the monthly effort to remove trash, paper, plastics, cigarette butts, broken beach furniture, car parts, recyclables and garbage from the 2 1/2 mile stretch of dog-friendly beach. They estimate the weight each month, and the cumulative total surpassed the 20,000 pound mark at the Saturday, October 3 beach cleanup! An average of 150 volunteers permonth remove an average of 500 pounds of garbage and recyclables per month during the two-hour event. Volunteers come from all walks of life, all age groups, and 15 area zip codes.
On the first Saturday of every month (weather permitting) volunteers gather at Ocean Cay Park to scour the beach from the Juno Beach pier to the southern edge of Carlin Park, making good on a pledge made to the Town of Jupiter 15 years ago. In 1994, the threat of closing the beach to dogs rallied a small group of concerned citizens, who mobilized quickly and began organizing beach cleanups and providing dog waste bags at beach crossovers. Since then, the growth of the group has exploded, as individuals and businesses rally to join an effort which repeatedly demonstrates care for the marine environment and the privilege of taking our four-footed friends to one of the last dog beaches in the area. As a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit corporation, the group relies on donations and sponsorships from concerned citizens and a supportive business community to assume ALL COSTS for the operations, saving the taxpayers of Jupiter and Palm Beach County significantly.
The Beach Cleanup is the first Saterday of every month. Volunteers gather at 8am SHARP at the Anita Lankler Pavilion in Ocean Cay Park, off Marcinski Road and US Hwy 1. They divide into teams, clean the 2 1/2 mile stretch of dog-friendlly beach, and return by 9:20am for a complimentary continental breakfast. Beach cleanups are SHINE ONLY; if weather is iffy, volunteers should call the FJB message line at 561-748-8140 by 7:15am to listen for a possible cancellation message. School community service hours are awarded. There is no need for individuals to register in advance but organized groups are kindly requested to leave a message on the FJB phone line. Volunteers of all ages are welcome; the cleanup guidelines and code of safety are available on the website at

I shot this video this weekend at the Second Annual Bark in the Park that took place at the West Boca Dog Park. I'll have that video up in a few days.Thank you CPR for having such a wonderful event to educate people about responsible pet ownership. You guys rock. Thank you folks from United Against breed Legislation for being so patient with me.
I could write a thesis about this subject. (but I won't lucky you guys) Please watch the video and hopefully it will give folks a better understanding of the issue.
I want to get this up quickly because its being talked about right now up in Tallahassee. Despite the fact that most large animal related groups including most veterinarians oppose breed specific legislation every year Perry Thurston of Broward County proposes this. I heard that it has gone through three committees and there is a companion bill in the senate.
The State of Florida has a statue in place since 1990 protecting cities and counties all across the State of Florida from passing BSL (767.14). For the past 2 years Representative Perry Thurston of Broward County, Plantation has made it his personal mission to overturn the very law that protects all breeds of dogs from all forms of discrimination in Florida. With that being said, this is not a Pit Bull issue anymore Any city or county within the State of Florida has the right to discriminate against any breed of dog they want. Therefore, Rottweiler, Dobermans, American Bulldogs, Husky, Boxer, Chow Chow, German Shepherds, Mastiffs, Akita or any other breed they wish to ban, can be and will be done.
People have fled from Miami Dade to other counties because in Miami if they catch your supposed "Pit Bull" it is confiscated and destroyed. I have been told that Broward will be the first county to pass BSL if this is passed.
Below is a link to the Florida House of Rep. along with the proposed Bill to overturn Florida’s Anti BSL law 767.14
This is what is currently in place and what Perry Thurston wants to reverse:
767.14 Additional local restrictions authorized.--Nothing in this act shall limit any local government from placing further restrictions or additional requirements on owners of dangerous dogs or developing procedures and criteria for the implementation of this act, provided that no such regulation is specific to breed and that the provisions of this act are not lessened by such additional regulations or requirements. This section shall not apply to any local ordinance adopted prior to October 1, 1990.

Why is August 2006 the magic date? Prior to that time, the volume of garbage picked up at monthly cleanups wasn't recorded by measure of weight, but by counting the number of trash bags. At the August 2006 beach cleanup, bathroom scales were brought from home to fine tune the estimates. The idea came from long-time cleanup captain, Maida Remmer, who said, "Why don't we give people a concrete number, a total weight so they can really understand the importance of what we do every month." She spearheaded the plan, and now all ten team captains turn in a weight estimate--for both garbage and recyclables--every month. In the fall of 2006, the cleanup efforts were boosted when Rapid Removal, a local debris removal firm, volunteered the use of it's truck and staff to retrieve and haul away the recyclables, a further benefit to our environment.
The Beach Cleanup is the first Saterday of every month. Volunteers gather at 8am SHARP at the Anita Lankler Pavilion in Ocean Cay Park, off Marcinski Road and US Hwy 1. Several of the girls had experience training with other derby teams in the state, but many joined with no experience at all. The founders decided the Palm Beach area needed a positive, fun outlet for women of all diversities to pursue the sport of roller derby.
I fell in love with this sport when I watched the movie "Whip It" Talking to some of the nice folks on the side lines i found out this is really a diverse group and kudos to them : its not an easy sport but I imagine very empowering. This was sunday morning practice and i'm hoping to be invited back.

Party Like the BIG Dogs with Friends of Jupiter Beach
A few weeks ago Tina Valant sent me this invitation to go to an event up in Jupiter. In her photos were the most gorgeous golden retrievers at the Square Grouper and I immediately emailed her back and said "How can I help?" I have to honestly admit that I really had no idea how much "The Friends of Jupiter Beach" did. I have taken my goldens Machiavelli and Casey to the beach a few times and I thought they just provided the poop bags and I honestly never gave it much thought. So not only did I have fun at this event, meet a lot of wonderful people, gain a huge admiration for the "Friends of Jupiter Beach" , get to party with the Big Dogs and Dawgs and Dawgetts at the world famous tiki bar "The Square Grouper" in Jupiter but low and behold -I actually learned something. "Friends of Jupiter Beach" is a impressive organization that is 4,000 people strong with a huge commitment to the environment and the pride in their town is palpable.
many thanks to Lynn Gibbons, Managing Director of the Friends of Jupiter Beach Joan Ross, President of the Friends of Jupiter Beach Jim Burg owner, the Square Grouper and all the wonderful sponsors and volunteers and folks and their dogs that came out. I'll be doing a second video with some more of the sponsors.
and to Skip's Pharmacy for supporting me in going out and capturing this wonderful day in our community.
A note about Tina: I've been shooting with Tina Valant for a long time. We are good friends that share absolute love and commitment to rescue and share a visual connection in the representation of that. Tina is also an expert event coordinator/marketing expert and thats how we met and some how we starting doing these videos together. She shot the photos, I shot the videos, and together we could show the world how much fun you can have with your pets thus promoting responsible pet ownership- something we both have very deep feelings about. A few years ago Tina was totally inspired by Corinne Bailey Rae's song "Breathless" and asked me to help her put a music video together. I told her sure but she needed to get permission. She did and the fine folks at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast and their wonderful executive director Frank Valante welcomed us no questions asked. We gotten lots of kudos for this and I'm proud to say Tina got "Palm Beach County's Animal Friend of the Year" award here from the Palm Beach Commissioners this past year for her work on the film and all the other wonderful things she does (rescuing animals, helping rescue raise money and countless other things) She is always there to help. A good friend to all.

They estimate the weight each month, and the cumulative total will SURPASS the 20,000 pound mark at the Saturday, October 3 beach cleanup! An average of 150 volunteers PER MONTH remove an average of 500 pounds of garbage and recyclables PER MONTH during the two-hour event.
Since then, the growth of the group has exploded, as individuals and businesses rally to join an effort which repeatedly demonstrates care for our marine environment and the privilege of taking our four-footed friends to one of the last dog beaches in the area. As a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit corporation, the group relies on donations and sponsorships from concerned citizens and a supportive business community to assume ALL COSTS for the operations, saving the taxpayers of Jupiter and Palm Beach County significantly.
Volunteers of all ages are welcome; the cleanup guidelines and code of safety are available on the website at www.friendsofjupiterbeach.com.

Palm Beach Roller Derby Girls Palm Beach Roller Derby Girls
Palm Beach Rollergirls Sassy!
a democratically run league, founded in October, 2009.

In her photos were the most gorgeous golden retrievers at the Square Grouper and I immediately emailed her back and said "How can I help?"
I have to honestly admit that I really had no idea how much "The Friends of Jupiter Beach" did.
"Friends of Jupiter Beach" is a impressive organization that is 4,000 people strong with a huge commitment to the environment and the pride in their town is palpable.

and to Skip's Pharmacy for supporting me in going out and capturing this wonderful day in our community.
A note about Tina:
I've been shooting with Tina Valant for a long time.
