Miami Today - Gene Schaefer

With over 20 years in banking and extensive leadership experience, Gene Schaefer says his professional journey has now awarded him the best job in Bank of America. But he took no shortcuts during his journey.
He joined a management training program soon after graduating from college that exposed him to different areas of the bank. He held multiple positions before becoming the bank’s market president in 2001 and market executive of commercial banking in 2006.
Mr. Schaefer is a member of the Orange Bowl Committee and serves on the board of governors of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, the board of Enterprise Florida, the board of United Way, the board of trustees of the American Red Cross, and is the incoming chair for United Way.
Mr. Schaefer believes “there is no ‘I’ in ‘team,’” as he constantly credits his team for being the backbone of Bank of America’s success in Miami, as well as his own.
And, speaking of bones, he says there is one area outside his office where he lacks expertise: cooking the perfect steak.
He was interviewed in his office on Brickell Avenue by Miami Today reporter Blanca Venegas.

In April 2012, Lourdes Lopez was named artistic director of Miami City Ballet and was scheduled to begin this May. However, after outgoing artistic director Edward Villella departed early, she found herself at the helm a little earlier than expected.
Years prior, Ms. Lopez began taking ballet lessons on the recommendation of a doctor at the age of 5, and when her orthopedic boots came off she pirouetted and plied into a wonderful dance career.
Now as she finds balance in her new role, she said Miami City Ballet dancers have welcomed her and she is looking forward to a very exciting season ahead.
Ms. Lopez was interviewed by reporter Laura Stace in the company’s Miami Beach headquarters.

Miami Today - Ernesto Perez

Ernesto Perez has been a very busy man since founding Dade Medical College 14 years ago. Since its inception, the college has grown significantly and now boasts campuses in Homestead, Miami, Miami Lakes, Hollywood, West Palm Beach and Jacksonville.
In 2011, Dade Medical College acquired Jacksonville’s Southern Career College. The
name was changed to University of Southernmost Florida in order to more accurately
represent the new direction of the institution and in recognition of the institution’s approval by its accrediting body to offer degrees up to the master’s degree level.
The acquisition was the first for Dade Medical College.
Mr. Perez said he is focusing on the launch of the University of Southernmost Florida campus in Coral Gables and has been eyeing opportunities for Dade Medical College in other parts of the state and abroad.
Recruited to the University of Southernmost Florida, Mr. Perez said, are Dr. Steve Kerr, who will serve as president, and the former mayor of Coral Gables, Don Slesnick, who has been named dean of the school of public administration.
Reporter Laura Stace interviewed Mr. Perez at the University of Southernmost Florida’s financial aid and admission office at 178 Giralda Ave.

Miami Today - Mike Redmond

Fans, rejoice – baseball season is no longer a dot on the horizon. It is now in plain sight, and the Miami Marlins have started their spring training under the guidance of a familiar face, Mike Redmond.
Mr. Redmond, a catcher, made his major league debut with the then Florida Marlins and played for the team from 1998 to 2004. He has many memories as a Marlins player, including being part of the winning 2003 World Series team. The team defeated the New York Yankees in six games, four games to two.
After his stint with the Marlins, Mr. Redmond was off to Minnesota, where he played with the Twins from 2005 to 2009. The next stop was Cleveland, where he played for the Indians in 2010.
In 2011, it was time for Mr. Redmond to make another baseball debut, this time as manager. He did so with Lansing – and earned the Midwest League Manager of the Year award for guiding the Lugnuts to a 77-60 record and an appearance in the Midwest League finals.
He added Dunedin manager to his resume last year, leading the Blue Jays to a 78-55 record and advanced to the first round of Florida State League playoffs.
Mr. Redmond’s career has transitioned from player to manager and the organization has made some significant transitions of its own in the past few years.
The franchise ended 2011 with a name change – from Florida Marlins to Miami Marlins – and a new logo and uniforms were unveiled.
It wasn’t long after that the Miami Marlins started their 2012 season at their own ballpark – the site of the former Orange Bowl. After sharing Sun Life Stadium with the Miami Dolphins for 19 seasons, the team finally had a stadium to call its own – with a retractable roof, no less.
While the stadium has been a sore point for some in the community, remarks made by then manager Ozzie Guillen about Fidel Castro last year soured things for the Marlins even further.
He apologized, was suspended for five games, and 13 months after signing a four-year, $10 million deal, was dismissed as manager.
In stepped Mr. Redmond – the recipient of the 2005 Bob Allison Award, given by the Minnesota Twins organization to a player who exemplifies determination, hustle, tenacity, competitive spirit and leadership both on and off the field. These qualities, Mr. Redmond said, are what he wants in his Marlins players this season.
With a host of young players ready to take the field, Mr. Redmond said he is looking forward to starting the season and showing the fans some good baseball.
Before spring training for the team started last week in Jupiter, Miami Today reporter Laura Stace interviewed Mr. Redmond in the Marlins dugout at Marlins Park.

After being incorporated on June 24, 2003, almost a decade later Doral is a thriving city that is poised for even more growth. The City of Doral has operated under the mayor-council-manager form of government since its incorporation and the new city elected Luigi Boria as their second mayor last year.
The first mayor of Doral, Juan Carlos Bermudez, spent two terms at the helm of the city and was not able to run again due to reaching his term limit.
Mr. Boria vied for the role of mayor against Frank Bolaños and Pete Cabrera, which eventually led to a run-off election between Mr. Boria and Mr. Bolaños that Mr. Boria won.
In 1983, Mr. Boria opened TMC – The Magic Computer in Caracas, and in 1989 the Boria family moved to the US and settled in Doral. They have resided in Doral ever since, and Mr. Boria said he has no plans of moving. Upon relocating to the US, Mr. Boria expanded his business and now employs more than 40 people.
Mayor Boria said he decided to enter the world of politics to help people. He served as a Doral City councilmember prior to running for the mayor’s office.
Mr. Boria took time out of his busy schedule to meet with reporter Laura Stace. He shared with her his vision for Doral under his leadership

David Klock has been a leader on both sides of the business world – in the private sector and in academia. Yet he started from humble beginnings as the son of a milkman who grew up, as he puts it, "on the wrong side of the tracks" in a working-class suburb west of Boston. Today, he leads the College of Business Administration at Florida International University after having done the same at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, among other posts he held at universities from Central Florida to California. In between, he led a dental and vision benefits company that grew its annual revenue from $20 million to more than $350 million during his tenure as CEO and chairman. Dr. Klock arrived at FIU just months ago after the school approached him, but there's already a lot on his plate: hiring more faculty, continuing and growing the emphasis on entrepreneurship, and ensuring that students – many of whom come from humble beginnings as well – develop the knowledge, skills and habits they will need to succeed. When he's not overseeing FIU's 8,000-student business school, you might find him teaching Sunday school to second graders. Or you might find him jogging, or gushing over his young granddaughter being a martial arts black belt. During an interview with Miami Today’s Scott Blake at FIU's Tamiami campus, Dr. Klock discussed his life and career.

In his school days, Frank Del Rio was a competitive runner. Today, he’s running two cruise lines, as chairman and CEO of Doral-based Prestige Cruise Holdings, the parent corporation for Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. He learned how to run a business at Certified Vacations, where he was executive vice president for sales and marketing before leaving the company in 1993. His next stop was Renaissance Cruises, where, somewhat ironically, he was fired as co-CEO. Renaissance later went bankrupt. In 2002, he founded Oceania Cruises with a group of investors, buying three ships that had belonged to Renaissance. In 2007, he and his partners sold a majority stake in Oceania to a private equity firm and the next year they acquired Regent Seven Seas Cruises.Today, the two cruise lines operate eight ships, including the company’s latest achievement, the Oceania Riviera, which recently began cruises from Port Miami. Mr. Del Rio says the company is going strong. “We just completed another record year,” he said. “Except for a dip in 2009 following the unfortunate events surrounding the Great Recession, every year has been a record year.”Mr. Del Rio came to the US at age seven when his parents fled Cuba. They lived in Connecticut for nine years, but later settled in the Miami area. He married his high school sweetheart and they have two children.Mr. Del Rio discussed his company and his career during an interview with Miami Today reporter Scott Blake aboard the Riviera while docked in Miami.

Miami Today: Paul Lehr

It was a little over a year ago that Paul T. Lehr decided he wanted to find a home for the National YoungArts Foundation. The determined executive director did not waste much time after acquiring the Bacardi Tower in 2012 and is already working with world-renowned architect Frank Gehry to transform the site into an arts hub. After reporter Laura Stace interviewed the energetic leader in his office in the historically listed blue-and-white tower at 2100 Biscayne Blvd., Mr. Lehr proudly gave the media group a tour and outlined preliminary plans. The first and second floors of the blue-and-white tower will be used as gallery and exhibition space. The third floor is pegged to comprise two to three units for an artist-in-residence program, while the fourth, fifth and sixth floors are slated to remain as office space for the organization. Mr. Lehr said the seventh floor will be used as a performance space, and he wishes to partner an education provider with a culinary institute to create a restaurant. The jewel box building west of the blue-and-white tower, now full of former Bacardi cubicles, is to be transformed into work space for artists of various disciplines, and a 20,000-square-foot white building on the property, not historically listed and also full of cubicles, is set to be demolished. This space and the remainder of undesignated space on the 3.5-acre property will be used for a 500- to 900-seat performance center and lush landscaped gardens. It is an exciting time for the organization with a new home and its YoungArts Week set to commence in just a few days.

It wasn’t a case of two ships passing in the night when John Sumberg met Brian Bilzin in Chicago in 1982. In fact, the two decided they wanted to work together, and years later they created the powerhouse legal firm Bilzin Sumberg. Since then, they have steered their business on a course for success and have grown their initial team of 11 lawyers to 130, many of whom have been named among the best in the nation.
Specializing in real estate, Mr. Sumberg has handled complicated cases and has been recognized as being among the best in his field throughout the nation.
And while the awards and accolades pay homage to his exceptional work, Mr. Sumberg is humble and gracious. He counts the fact that clients have remained with him for decades as one of the best rewards of his labor.
After splitting his time between managing his firm, practicing law and working with one of the many charitable organizations he supports, Mr. Sumberg enjoys being able to travel and read.
Reporter Laura Stace interviewed Mr. Sumberg at the offices of Bilzin Sumberg at 1450 Brickell Ave.

Miami Today: Ora Strickland

It hasn’t been long since Ora Strickland took the helm as dean of Florida International University’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences, but she’s already finding out what South Florida life is all about as she settles in.
Widely renowned for studying the symptoms of expectant fathers, Dr. Strickland may have made the move alone but brings with her a wealth of knowledge in the research arena.
She comes to FIU after spending 22 years as a professor in the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory University in Atlanta. During her career, Dr. Strickland said she has seen more students gravitate toward the six disciplines offered at FIU’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences: nursing, athletic training education, communication sciences and disorders, health services administration, occupational therapy and physical therapy.
Dr. Strickland is taking the move in stride with confidence, and has even taken her love of singing to Marlins Park – singing the national anthem. But singing before all those people didn’t worry her, she said, as she has been speaking in front of audiences all over the world during her career.

Miami Today: Matthew Whitman Lazenby (2/2)

In a way, Matthew Whitman Lazenby is his family’s answer to the new world of Miami’s upscale shopping scene. He favors the work of Ayn Rand, the late Russian-American novelist and philosopher. She believed laissez-faire capitalism is the ideal political-economic system where people deal with each other as traders of free exchange to their mutual benefit. In a sense, he sees those elements play out every day on the job, as operating partner in his family’s business –the Bal Harbour Shops, one of Greater Miami’s bastions of high-end fashion shopping. He is at the helm at a challenging and exciting time for the 47-year-old, open-air shopping center, which is working to stay ahead of the competition in the area’s evolving and increasingly competitive luxury retail sector. In recent years, several stores at the Shops have defected to newer locales such as the Aventura Mall and midtown-Miami’s Design District.Mr. Whitman Lazenby, whose duties including tenant leases, says other stores have stepped in, but the need to offer designers more space is paramount. With that in mind, the Shops is about to undertake a major expansion, estimated at a cost of about $100 million, and he is helping shape the plan. After stints working in the real estate field in New York and Detroit, Mr. Whitman Lazenby got the seasoning he needed to step into a leadership role at the Shops. He completed the process with a master’s degree in real estate development, which he is sure to put to use with the expansion – including relocating a nearby church. At his office in the mall, Mr. Whitman Lazenby spoke with Miami Today reporter Scott Blake about his work to help carry his family’s legacy into the future.
