    • Patrick Duddy 2/4 - Forum Club

    • Patrick Duddy, the man who was expelled as U.S. Ambassador to Venezuela by President Hugo Chavez amid claims of U.S. plans to overthrow him, will talk about his dicey time in Venezuela and why relations with the U.S. are so important. It’s not an easy job to be the person the United States sends to Venezuela to smooth things over and promote American interests in a country that provides the U.S. with 10 percent of its oil supply. Ambassador Duddy served under both the Bush and Obama administrations from 2007-2010 where he oversaw one of the most complex political, economic and public diplomacy portfolios in the Western Hemisphere. Ambassador Duddy is currently the Diplomat in Residence at Duke University and is one of the Department of State’s most senior Latin American specialists with broad experience in trade, energy, public affairs and crisis management.    Prior to his assignment in Venezuela, Duddy served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere.  In that capacity, he was directly responsible for the Office of Economic Policy and Summit Coordination, which included the hemispheric energy portfolio, as well as the Offices of Brazil/Southern Cone Affairs and of Caribbean Affairs.  He also played a lead role in coordinating U.S. support for the restoration of democracy in Haiti.
