When the $20 million Miramar Cultural Center and ArtsPark opened in December, patrons had two dramatic spectacles to pick from: an Italian opera scheduled for March and the perilous timing of Miramar's entry into the high-culture business.
The center's debut coincides with a recession that has hammered South Florida's nonprofit arts community — the regional museums, theater companies and other organizations that live on a mix of ticket sales and donations.
