While earning a degree in English and political science at Duke University, Stephanie Norman fell in love with theater and realized – that was her calling.
She got the opportunity to work for award-winning producers in New York, learning how to produce plays.
After moving back to South Florida, Ms. Norman joined forces with an actress/director and playwright to produce local theater.
“We were three women who really wanted to shake things up here in South Florida and we wanted to do something new and we wanted to do something that would be collaborative,” she said.
They created City Theatre, which found its first home at the University of Miami’s Ring Theatre and four years ago moved to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.
The 15-year-old theater group produces Summer Shorts, America’s Short Play Festival. Writers submit their plays for review and, this year, 15 were selected for the festival. The theater auditions the actors and designs the scenery for the shows.
This season, City Theatre is also premiering its first full-length production titled Camp Kappawanna, a new Lisa Loeb musical about the joys of summer camp.
Summer Shorts is running June3-27 and Camp Kappawanna June 17-27.
Ms. Norman discussed the theater group’s accomplishments and plans with Miami Today reporter Yudislaidy Fernandez at the Adrienne Arsht Center in downtown Miami.
