Pascale Charlot is not typical. And neither are her students.
Years ago, Ms. Charlot was sending criminals to jail. Today she is sending students to prestigious schools in Florida and elsewhere in the United States.
Ms. Charlot is the dean of the Honors’ College at Miami Dade College.
“I see myself in these kids,” she said. “ I’m a first generation American of Haitian decent. I was the kid who just loved to read. I was a nerd, a proud one and I’m still a nerd to this day.”
Ms. Charlot said her students are special too. “They’re high-achieving, they’re talented and they are looking to transform their lives, their families, their communities, and they’re looking to us to help guide them to that process,” she said.
Ms. Charlot talked about the Honors College and her role and responsibilities in her office at the Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami with Miami Today reporter Lou Ortiz.
