Description: When he is not running a 560-bed hospital, Anthony Degina, Jr., a hospital administrator for 25 years, is chairing the South Florida Hospital & Healthcare Association.
Mr. Degina, chief executive officer of University of Miami Hospital, has taken on the role of chairman at a time when Miami-Dade tackles a major health care crisis caused by Jackson Health System’s financial woes.
“I think everyone agrees that the idea that somehow Jackson would not continue to function and continue to provide the wide range of services that it does is really unthinkable from everybody’s perspective,” Mr. Degina said.
The UM Hospital, along with two other local health care providers, is doing its part to help by paying for the dialysis treatment of patients who lost Jackson’s funding after its budget troubles surfaced.
“…The association has been working to perhaps create a long-term, community-based solution for taking care of these patients,” he said.
Since its transition from Cedars to UM, Mr. Degina says the hospital has experienced rapid growth.
Plans are under way to unveil an institute for surgical advancement in the next three to six months, he said. The comprehensive center is to offer patients less invasive surgical procedures and a quicker recovery.
Mr. Degina discussed his responsibilities and plans with Miami Today reporter Yudislaidy Fernandez at the UM Hospital in Miami.
