Description:

When he was a boy, Eugene Anderson’s family moved overseas, expanding his view of how the world of marketing works and influencing his career as an educator and later as a business school administrator.

Today, Mr. Anderson, as the recently appointed dean of the University of Miami’s School of Business Administration, is bringing his insight of global business to students and faculty at the Coral Gables campus.

“We should be more global in our approach,” he said. “Expanding the program would be good, both in terms of student learning opportunities and getting students out into the world more.”

Prior to arriving at UM, Mr. Anderson was senior associate dean for academic affairs and a professor of business administration at the University of Michigan’s Stephen M. Ross School of Business. Now at the top post at UM’s business school, he continues to grapple with what educators must do to equip graduates for the 21st Century.

Mr. Anderson plans to expand international education partnerships, cross-disciplinary programs, and internships for business students at UM to help them stay competitive in what he describes as an increasingly competitive global marketplace. He also wants to get more business recruiters and corporate partners involved in the business school to maximize opportunities for graduates.

“I’m looking to build our relationships with recruiters,” he said. “This month I’m traveling to New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Sao Paulo to talk to recruiters about our product: the students. [I’m going to] try to encourage those that are already satisfied to engage with our students in terms of internships and full-time job placement.”

Mr. Anderson spoke about his vision for Miami’s business school and what today’s students need to be successful with Miami Today staff writer Scott Blake in his office at the Coral Gables campus.
