  • Once again, the proponents of Amendment 4 conveniently leave out part of the story.  The Florida Supreme Court has already determined that Amendment 4 is a vote on everything and covers ALL changes to the comprehensive plan.  This means hundreds of technical items from drainage to solid waste to parks to fire station locations would be on the ballot. On Sunday, there was a legal ad for the small town of South Bay - it has to change its comprehensive plan  to allow a fire station.  If Amendment 4 were on the books, this would have to wait until the next election before they could start building their fire station.

The courts and DCA have already decided that the state law WAS followed in St. Pete Beach.  The lawsuits aren't about procedure - they are about the ballot summary.  Of course, Ms. Willett knows this as her leader is involved in the lawsuits.

  • If our 'representative democracy' to which Mr. Anthony refers actually worked in the way it was intended, then Amendment 4 would never have been placed on November's ballot. Ms. Willett accurately identifies the heart of this issue -- that residents (voters) have the right to equal voice when deciding proposed changes to Land Use Plans. These plans are too often 'amended' to suit the purposes of a few private individuals at great expense to the many residents who would be significantly affected by such changes.

Description:

If passed, Amendment Four would require municipalities to seek voter approval in order to change their existing comprehensive land-use plans.  Advocates say it will reduce uncontrolled growth, while opponents say it will hurt one of Florida’s vital industries.  We discuss the pros and cons of this amendment.
